Frequently Asked Questions about
Embracing the Mother Retreats
So you have questions? Below are some of the questions that have come up about the retreat! We hope these questions help you decide to join us on retreat and get away for a weekend!
Where is Manitou Springs, Colorado?
Good question! This little hidden gem of a town is one of Colorado's oldest and best kept secrets! Nestled right at the base of Pike's Peak in Colorado Springs, it is an easily accessible mountain town that has cute, eclectic shops and boutique restaurants that offer a unique Colorado experience without the long drive into the mountains! The elevation is 6412ft, just a little over 1000ft higher than Denver.
It is a five minute drive from the Garden of the Gods, The Pike's Peak Railway and 20 minutes off I25, one of Colorado's main highways. It is an hour or so from Denver (one and half hours from Denver International Airport) and 30 minutes from the Colorado Springs Airport.
Sun Mountain Center is a 6-acre property built in the early 1900's up high on a rocky ledge. It has three mansions on the property. Our retreat is in the largest one, overlooking Manitou Springs and Pikes Peak. It is STUNNING both from the inside and the outside. The property has a long, interesting history that has led it to be a retreat center. Each room is distinct, ornate and spacious! From the marble fireplaces to the Swan-designed spouts in the baths, you are sure to feel as though you are in a different time and space!

What are the room options?
First off, the rooms are typically very spacious. This was first a private mansion and then a Bed & Breakfast (still is!). The rooms each have a distinct feel and design and some of the original pieces that make it so unique. It has three Private King Size rooms available, two shared double/triple options with single beds and one very spacious room that can hold up to 6 people. The beds have recently been upgraded and are very comfortable (especially important to us for out retreat mamas!) and the cleaning staff takes great pride in how clean the space is.
Like most yoga retreat spaces in Colorado, there are more shared accommodation options than private ones. This has a purpose! We know that connecting with other moms is important for community and the shared accommodations support this! If you are a light sleeper and are in a shared space, maybe bring ear plugs (and know that the house is really quiet - except for the wildlife you might hear from being in a mountain town!), and you'll be doing yoga and meditation and soaking in wonderful hot springs, so our experience tells us you're sure to sleep really well!)
I am six years postpartum. Is this retreat for me, too?
We welcome mamas from various backgrounds and experiences. And we have had women who were in their second and third trimesters of pregnancy to 8 years postpartum, and everything in between! We have loved the diversity of backgrounds and experiences of the mamas that have come before and hope to continue to have women who are called to retreat with us.
What type of transportation is available to get me to the retreat?
If you are joining us from Colorado, it is likely the most ideal way to get to the retreat location is via your own car. We suggest carpooling if you are retreating with a friend. If you are coming from out-of-town/state, you will likely want to rent a car if you are driving down from Denver. There is also Uber/Taxi from the airport in Colorado Springs. Please let us know if we can help you locate a rental car or figure out transportation!
I am new to yoga and/or I have not done yoga while pregnant or postpartum, is this a safe retreat for me?
Yes! This is a yoga retreat specifically designed to cater to your body both as your grow your baby and as you heal from birth. Whether you are pregnant or 2-3years from having your babies, our facilitators are extensively trained in prenatal + postnatal yoga and are experienced with helping mothers find the modification that meets them where they are.
Once at the retreat, if there is anything that the facilitators should know to help support you and your pregnant or postpartum needs, please feel free to notify us and we will make accommodations!
I have a special diet, will this retreat be able to cater to my needs?
Absolutely! The chef at Sun Mountain Center is highly-skilled/trained to create healthy + delicious cuisine that caters to everyone's needs. The food on the retreat will be vegetarian and organic, ensuring ample protein and flavor as possible! When you register, please indicate your dietary needs and we will ensure they are honored.
I am breastfeeding and will need to store my milk while away from my baby, is there a fridge?
Yes! There is a small fridge where mamas can store their milk while they are at the retreat. And space to pump privately can also be made available.
Are babies/children allowed?
We LOVE babies and children but this retreat is for mamas only! There is, however, a LOT of fun things to do around Manitou & Colorado Springs, including the Pikes Peak Cog-way, Great Wolf Lodge, Cheyenne Mountain Zoo...etc...Your partner could always stay in the area and enjoy it too!
WHEN IS IT TOO LATE TO TRAVEL by Plane IN PREGNANCY?
Firstly, we recommend this question be discussed with your care provider as each pregnancy and mama is different AND, secondly, according to the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynocologists (ACOG), it can be perfectly safe to fly during your pregnancy, and even well into your third trimester. Many healthcare providers believe air travel is not recommended after 36 weeks—in fact, most airlines won't let pregnant passengers on board after the 36-week mark. Please check in with your care team!
